Keren Cytter developed SHOW REAL DRAMA for Deutsche Bank as part of their series Globe in the Deutsche Bank Towers in March 2011.
After the its premiere in Frankfurt am Main, SHOW REAL DRAMA has been touring to Berlin (Based in Berlin) and Bergen (Kunsthall Bergen), and will tour to the following institutions and theaters in the coming months:

Im Jahr 1981 fand in der Kunsthalle Basel, kuratiert von Jean-Christophe Ammann, die Ausstellung 6 Künstler aus Basel statt, an welche wir dieses Jahr anknüpfen möchten. Die Ausstellung war damals umstritten und bedeutend zugleich, da sie sechs jungen Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus dem Raum Basel erstmals die Möglichkeit bot, ihr Werk als individuelle Position in einem institutionellen Rahmen auszustellen. Unter dem Titel 6 Künstler aus Basel x2 wurden für eine Präsentation im Untergeschoss die Ausstellungsteilnehmer von 1981 eingeladen; Im Obergeschoss sollen sechs aus den eingereichten Dossiers ausgewählte Positionen gezeigt werden. Obwohl unter dem gleichen Titel, sind die beiden Schauen als voneinander unabhängige Ausstellungen zu verstehen.

Die Ausstellung 6 Künstler aus Basel x2 wird kuratiert von Sandra Bradvic, Roos Gortzak und Adam Szymczyk.

Ana Cristea Gallery is pleased to present Accidental Thoughts and Metaphors, a group show bringing together the artistic practices of four Belgian artists: Michiel Ceulers, Ellen de Meutter, Peter Rogiers and Ante Timmermans. The works in the exhibition begin from traditional approaches to specific mediums. Starting from a stretched canvas, a mound of clay, or a piece of paper, the artists slice, paste and sculpt these materials into works that are both images and objects, surfaces and interiors, visual and physical provocations. At the bridge between abstract and figuration, each artist presents a distinct and singular approach and outcome, often through the combination of what seem to be opposing forces.

For his second solo show with Rod Barton, MCHL CLRS DRNK TRBL, Michiel Ceulers presents a series of new works that he refers to as 'Spirit Paintings'. These white monochromatic paintings – marked by the application and subsequent scraping off of paint– are excised of all content except for a QR code embedded within the picture plane. Each QR code links to an instructional video hosted on YouTube of how to mix a specific alcoholic cocktail. As a result interaction is deflected to a virtual plane whilst the impenetrable white surface reflects the gaze back onto the viewer. The spirit of the title can also be seen in metaphysical terms with regard to the incorporeal. Here gestural marks are merely traces of transmission from actual to virtual realms. Thus in the traditional sense these paintings have no body: they are machines for generating, rather than representing form.

Im UN-Sicherheitsrat wird ein Wandteppich mit Guernica-Motiv verhüllt, um bald darauf ein Satellitenfoto als zentrales Argument in der Legitimierung eines Krieges zu präsentieren. Bilder einer Exekution werden live ins Weiße Haus übertragen, doch kein Foto gelangt an die Öffentlichkeit.
Rasant und unmittelbar verbreiten sich Bilder; sie erscheinen als einzige Zeugnisse, die uns ein Ereignis glaubhaft und erfahrbar machen können. Seeing is believing – und dennoch übersteigen Bilder unsere Vorstellungskraft sowie unseren Glauben an die Wirklichkeit. Die Erkenntnis, dass Bilder nicht einfach Repräsentanten außermedialer Wirklichkeit sind, sondern eigene Realitäten erschaffen, ist mittlerweile integraler Bestandteil zeitgenössischer Bildkompetenz. Die visuelle Gegenwärtigkeit politischer Ereignisse, die Politisierung von Bildern sowie die unkontrollierbare Geschwindigkeit ihrer Verbreitung haben in der gegenwärtigen Kunst zu einem konzentrierten Nachdenken über das Bild geführt.

Immersive Surfaces
As part of “The Dumbo Arts Festival” September 23rd-25th, 2011

Immersive Surfaces explores ideas of “crowd art,” and the meaning of surface as a media platform in a specific cityscape. Presented in three phases, Immersive Surfaces presents 18 works in a more traditional video art format, on a projected, Op-Art background, which animates itself in the second part of the program before leading into the climactic third section of the show. “As Above, So Below,” is a new art/media collaboration covering 25,000+ continuous sq. ft. of the Manhattan Bridge Anchorage and Archway. One of the largest single projections ever presented.

Die Ausstellung präsentiert eine Auswahl der Erwerbungen der Gruppe Junge Kunst. Die Gruppe Junge Kunst gehört zur Vereinigung Zürcher Kunstfreunde (VZK), dem Gönnerverein des Kunsthauses, und kauft seit 1970 zeitgenössische Kunst an. Die Ausstellung reicht von den Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart und ist als Geschichte in mehreren Kapiteln konzipiert.

Susie is taking the night train to visit Anke - her long time friend from high school. The roads of the two friends departed long time ago when Susie was accepted to The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and Tina was suffering from clinical depression.

This story is acted in the back stage of the theater while the audience is exposed only to the actors in their empty moments and in the brakes between the scenes. The theater play and the relationships between the actors are slowly unfolding behind the scenes and in front of the audience. The actors talk continuously and move back and forward from the stage to the backstage while their words and actions are overlapping one another.

In the context of its anniversary the museum has invited ten collectors who are closely involved with the Van Abbemuseum to share their personal passion for the arts with the public. The collectors, who are all members of the Van Abbemuseum Promoters Foundation, selected one important work from their collection and explained their choice in a video interview which formed part of the exhibition. The museum itself also made a selection from these collections and in this way focused on a number of story lines within every individual collection. The works are exhibited on the five floors of the tower of the Van Abbemuseum, a very special setting for this exhibition. The internationally well-known designer Piet Hein Eek is responsible for the spatial design of the exhibition.

With The Collectors Show, visitors have a unique opportunity to see various works from private collections which are only rarely on display in the public domain. This reveals an important and generally invisible link in the history of the Van Abbemuseum.

Addressing the effects of displacement, Off Site brings together nine artists who engage with methods of transference and re-combination. Working across painting, sculpture and installation, traditional modes of display are cited yet ultimately contested. Channels of information are refracted, altered by super-imposition and layering. Interweaving alternative narratives from iterations that otherwise remain implicit; jarring encounters of dissonant entities are personalized and cherished. Popular culture and personal histories interject as compendiums of mundane objects and images are compiled, revealing latent, unexpected associations. Suspending the ideal of the singular artist, homogeneity is circumvented in favour of creolisation. Tactility and collaboration are paramount: preconceptions of utility are outmoded by reinvention.

The group exhibition will single out artistic positions from Berlin’s eclectic art scene and has been inspired by a memorial stone, which found its firm place on a bridge at Zurich’s main station. The landmark, crafted by Otto Münch (1885-1965) in 1959, carries the inscription “863 km to Berlin” and serves as symbol of the amicable alliance and significant cultural exchange between Zurich and Berlin.

Die Gruppenausstellung „Sense and Sensibility“ widmet sich der Frage der Verbindung von Literatur und bildender Kunst. Dabei steht jedoch weniger das Verhältnis von Text und Bild im Zentrum der Ausstellung, sondern vielmehr Inspirationen und Übergänge zwischen der Arbeit von bildenden KünstlerInnen und SchriftstellerInnen, wobei auch die Thematik von Doppelbegabungen behandelt wird.

Die Wechselbeziehungen von bildender Kunst und Literatur sind vielfältig. Historisch gesehen sind die Bezüge klar, wenn wir an den Dadaismus, die écriture automatique des Surrealismus, an die Visuelle Poesie der 1960er Jahre und die konzeptuelle Kunst denken. Aber wie sieht der zeitgenössische Umgang bildender KünstlerInnen mit Belletristik aus? Texte sind mittlerweile fixer Bestandteil von Projekten zeitgenössischer bildender Kunst. Die Ausstellung hingegen geht der Frage nach, inwieweit bildende KünstlerInnen nach wie vor von Texten der Literatur beeinflusst sind, welche Werke sie lesen und wie sie in ihre künstlerischen Arbeiten einfließen. Einen besonderen Schwerpunkt setzt die Ausstellung im Bereich Postkolonialismus – so wird das Reisen, Eroberungen, die Befreiung von Fremdherrschaft und das Zusammenleben unterschiedlicher Kulturen in den künstlerischen Arbeiten thematisiert.

Dirty Dancing assembles the work of three artists exploring the possibilities of contemporary painting, in a relatively rough, even aggressive way with techniques that include mixing spray with acrylic paint, glueing dirty artefacts on the canvas, including words or phrases, printing of randomly chosen objects or even destroying the canvas with cuts. In spite of all these formal correlations the three artists work with completely different strategies.

The space of intersection of the languages of art and cinema has for twenty years been the subject of analysis and discussion of the participants of the Media Forum at the Moscow Film Festival: artists, film makers, and art and film critics. This year the programme’s organizers have realized probably the most grandiose project in all Media Forum history, a project dedicated to the adjacent cinema and video art aesthetics.

The central part of this project is the Expanded Cinema exhibition opens on June 15th 2011 at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. The display that consists of videos by well-known artists is divided into several thematic sections which demonstrate the key idea of the project — the idea of Expanded Cinema. This exhibition is not retrospective in character, on the contrary, it tries to analyze and describe the current situation in the art of moving images, that’s why all works presented were created in the last few years, some of them — especially for this project.

«The language with which video art speaks is distinct from that of cinema. Now under the influence of video psychology cinema is mutating and media art defines new ways for its development: the opportunities to work with space, at the intersection of visual and audio images, using interactive communication with the viewer,» — says Olga Shishko, the project’s curator. «Planning the exposition of the Expanded Art/ Expanded Cinema exhibition we aimed to attract the audience attention specifically to the visual characteristics of video art (composition, rhythm, texture, and proportions), and also to the conceptual aspects of its language, to video’s intervention into the viewer’s own personal space».

Most of the works on display will be housed by the MMoMA, where the attempt has been made to codify the interrelations of these two spheres of screen culture. Each of the museum’s floors is given to one of the aspects to the mutual fluctuation of themes, ideas and images.

In Europe, and certainly in the Netherlands, we are experiencing a true ‘renaissance of folk culture’. This summer, the Cobra Museum presents a multilateral, international group exhibition that links today's renewed interest in folk culture to contemporary art and cultural heritage. The exhibition takes a close look at the relationship between folk culture and art, in which the most pertinent issue is the role that folk culture plays in the continuing process of globalization.

Over twenty European artists for whom folk culture is a source of inspiration are taking part. Several of these artists have been especially invited by the Cobra Museum to develop new work for this exhibition. Works by some of the Cobra artists are included. Cobra was the first post-war movement of avant-garde artists for whom folk art and folk culture were an essential source of information.

Die großformatigen Acryl- und Ölgemälde der Künstlerin Yesim Akdeniz Graf mit ihren klar konturierten, flächig gemalten Motiven bedienen sich einer rätselhaften und verschlüsselten Bildsprache. Dennoch (oder gerade deshalb) rufen Sie eine Faszination hervor, der sich der Betrachter nur schwer entziehen kann. In den Arbeiten der 1978 im türkischen Izmir geborenen Malerin finden sich zahlreiche Zeichen und Zitate wieder, die sich sowohl auf die Klassische Moderne beziehen, als auch aus dem popkulturellen Bildfundus schöpfen. Außerdem zirkulieren Akdeniz Grafs Bilder immer wieder um die Gedichte Edgar Allen Poes, die Filme von Catherine Breillat, J.G. Das für eine vorerst unbestimmte Zeit in einem Basler Privathaushalt installierte Tableau Les regards obliques (2011) verweist auf Subjektivierungsweisen im Feld des Visuellen. Als eine Genealogie des Sammelns und Ausstellens angelegt, beginnend mit den estudes – einem spezifischen Raumtypus, der sich im 14. Jahrhundert in Frankreich entwickelte – untersucht Les regards obliques
die Verklammerung von Selbstverhältnissen, die zu bilden die Besuchenden jeder Ausstellung, sowie auch ihre Produzent_innen aufgefordert sind mit der spezifischen sozialräumlichen Situation der Intervention.

The Young Belgian Painters Award is one of the most important visual arts events in Belgium. The contest has been putting the spotlight on young Belgian artists since 1950. ‘Young’ means under 35, ‘Belgian’ means of Belgian nationality or resident in Belgium, while painting is no longer the only discipline covered. This competition could be said to be the equivalent of the Turner Prize in Britain, the Prix Marcel Duchamp in France, and the Vincent Award in the Netherlands.

For the event, selected candidates will enter a new piece which will compete for one of four awards: the ‘Crowet’ Young Belgian Painters Award (€ 25.000), the ‘Emile and Stephy Langui’ Young Belgian Painters Award (€ 12.500), the Centre for Fine Arts Award (€12.500), and the ING Award (€ 12.500).

In December 2010 the jury selected ten artists out of a possible 276 candidates for the 2011 competition: David Catherall, Michiel Ceulers, Pieterjan Ginckels, Manor Grunewald, Hou Chien Cheng, Paul Hendrikse, Kelly Schacht, Joris Van De Moortel, Cédric Van Turtelboom and Freek Wambacq. From 9 June to 11 September 2011 these ten artists will be exhibiting their work in the Centre for Fine Arts. The awards ceremony will take place on 8 June 2011

„Ich denke ja nicht alles allein, sondern das geschieht weitgehend im Zettelkasten.“

Der Soziologe Niklas Luhmann hat ein systematisches Denken entwickelt, das sämtliche gesellschaftliche Phänomene als Systeme beschreibt. Herzstück seiner Gedankenwelt war ein Zettelkasten in der Ecke seines Büros in Bielefeld. Den fütterte er über dreissig Jahre. Jeden wichtigen Gedanken hielt er auf einem Zettel fest. Einen fotografischen Zettelkasten besitzt die Berliner Künstlerin Sonya Schönberger. Mit ihren Sammlungen inventarisiert sie ihre Erinnerungen. Doch nicht nur Fotografien, auch Feuerzeuge, Tierchen, Beutel, Stifte, Klebebänder und Tagebücher werden systematisch erfasst. Sonya Schönberger entwickelt damit keine gesellschaftlichen Theorien, sondern erzählt mehrdeutige Alltagsgeschichten. Für diese Ausstellung zeigt Sonya Schönberger ihre neue Arbeit "641 objetcs without qualities", die in Zusammenarbeit mit Christof Zwiener enstanden ist. Irene Weingartner bringt mit ihren seismographischen Aufzeichnungen die molekulare Welt auf Papier. Ihre Versuchungsanlagen gleichen einem wissenschaftlichen Experiment. Produzierte oder empfangene Signale werden im Hirn umgewandelt. Weitergeleitet zum Arm und über Bleistift oder Tusche aufs Papier gebracht. Feine Striche machen mikroskopisch kleine Vorgänge unserer Umwelt sichtbar.

Yeşim Akdeniz Graf, inspired by Edgar A. Poe’s short story “The Tell-Tale Heart”, reviews it as a metaphor on reckoning with the past. Along with Poe’s stories and poems, Akdeniz Graf possesses a wide variety of strong works from Catherine Breillat’s films, J.G. Ballard’s novels, Frued’s symbolisms and especially Camille Paglia’s “Sexual
Personae – Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickenson”. Akdeniz Graf’s works contain symbolism, romanticism, metaphors and posses a strong imaginary, utopian story boards. The artist possesses an ironic as well as a romantic annotation, while her belief that the prime retribution of today’s people are “modernism” and “modern thought”. Akdeniz Graf investigates also through the symbolic language of her work, Freud’s sexist commentary which has shaped the perception in the 20th century.Yeşim Akdeniz Graf is also collaborating with Emre Irmak on a sound
installation particularly designed for her exhibition “The Tell-Tale Heart”.

My hands in your sneakers, a duo exhibition by Michiel Ceulers (Belgium, 1986) and Jean charles de Quillacq (France, 1979)

"The paintings of Michiel Ceulers embody the seductive messiness of unexpected coupling. In his Love Birds series Ceulers literally grafts two unlikely paintings onto one another, leaving evidence of his seemingly insouciant matchmaking. His Corner Pieces join paintings at 90-degree angles, creating new wholes and demanding a different type of viewer interaction. The diversity of Ceulers’ paintings is initially hard to make sense of, but they are ultimately united by a reckless and yet controlling logic. The act of painting is paramount in Ceulers’ work; he never hides his technique, which often relies on choreographed mistakes and subtractive measures. You can see the angle from which paint was sprayed; the way tape was ripped off; where panels were bolted together; and where surfaces were sanded away. Fragments left by previous studio residents make their way into his work, as do defiant art historical references. Ceulers strips away what’s precious and demands we live with his art, just as he does in his own untidy studio."

The Years of the Hour Blue

The Picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum will host an exhibition comprising 40 historical works by the internationally renowned Belgian artist, Jan Fabre (born 1958 in Antwerp). These works belong to his series “The Blue Hour”, and most of them were created between 1986 and 1990. Executed with a blue BIC ballpoint pen, these drawings focus on metamorphosis and rebirth. The drawings – and a selection of three-dimensional objects with surfaces also covered with ballpoint drawings - will be placed in a number of galleries and rooms of the Picture Gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, entering into a dialogue with masterpieces in the KHM’s permanent collection such as Tintoretto’s Susanna and the Elders, Caravaggio’s Man holding Tortoises, and Rubens’ Feast of Venus. In addition, important sculptures by the artist will be displayed in the Entrance Hall and – visible from Maria-Theresien-Square – on the roof of the museum, initiating a fascinating dialogue between the contemporary and the historical, the transient and the eternal.

The works on show are loans from important private collections and international museums such as the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum Kiasma in Helsinki, and the Museum of the 21st Century in Kanazawa (Japan).

HBK-Professor Walter Dahn zeigt in der Hochschulgalerie einen Überblick seiner Malereien auf Papier aus fast 40 Jahren. Es handelt sich dabei um Arbeiten, die bisher nur sehr selten und in wesentlich geringerem Umfang öffentlich präsentiert wurden und die seit seiner Zeit als Schüler von Joseph Beuys an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf quasi parallel zu allem anderen, was er bisher erarbeitet hat, entstanden sind. »Diese Dinge bezeichnen den Punkt, der alles betrifft, was ich im größeren Format mit zum Teil ganz unterschiedlichen Mitteln versucht habe zu erarbeiten und natürlich auch zur Diskussion zu stellen«, sagt Walter Dahn. Die Ausstellung wird begleitet von Filmvorführungen und Diskussionsveranstaltungen. Es erscheint ein Katalog im Verlag Walter König.

"The paintings of Yesim Akdeniz Graf (Izmir, Turkey, 1978) can be read as mysterious stills from a film. A narrative that slowly unfolds in the successive parts of a series, but that never fully reveals itself. Akdeniz Graf derived the title and dramatic composition for her third solo exhibition at Galerie Fons Welters from the poem by Edgar Allan Poe, whose persona wanders forlorn through an October night – ‘The skies they were ashen and sober; / The leaves they were crispèd and sere’."
