The fragmentary narratives in the films of Keren Cytter have been noted for their original experimentation with the telling of emotion. Cytter, who is also a novelist, crafts multifaceted scripts that play on notions of the romantic and the realistic, the excessive and the banal.
The films Alla ricerca di fratelli/In Search for Brothers and Forza che viene dal passateo/A Force from the Past (2008) deal with Italian clichés. The Italian film of the 60s serves as a reference, especially those of Pasolini and Fellini. Combining several stories, they each articulate distinct points of view, emphasizing moral and religious issues through the behavior of the characters. The amateur actors are locals from Trento and surrounding areas, the settings are in Trento and some of its social meeting places. The stories shift rapidly in the mode of stream-of-consciousness, assisted by cinematic tools and theatrical techniques. The result is a confusing collage of places and figures connected by the story and the text.
