GALLERY HISTORY

The gallery was founded by Elisabeth Kaufmann in the year 1974 in the small Swiss city of Olten under the name of Galerie Elisabeth Kaufmann. After moving to Basel 1977/78, the gallery was based in Zurich from 1981-1988, then returned to Basel for the years between 1988-2000. Since 2000 the gallery has established itsself in Zurich once more. Located at the corner of Rotwandstrasse/Müllerstrasse, Galerie Elisabeth Kaufmann is part of the exciting art scene of the pulsating area around Zurich’s notorious Langstrasse.

In the early years, the concept of the gallery was based on five points: 1. Painting (represented by Walter Dahn, Martin Disler, Anselm Stalder, Klaudia Schifferle, Helmut Federle and Jean Frédéric Schnyder et al.); 2. Drawing (Walter Dahn, Martin Disler, Helmut Federle, Klaudia Schifferle et al.); 3. Arte Povera (Fabro, Zorio, Penone, Anselmo). 4. multi media (Christian Boltanski, Annette Messager, Rebecca Horn et al.) 5. Conceptual Art (Hanne Darboven, Gerhard Merz, Reiner Ruthenbeck, Edda Renouf et al.).

The many-sided approach of our beginning years continued to be esteemed during the next decades, involving abstract painting (James Hyde, Susanne Paesler), photography, video and installation (Gloria Friedmann, Defraouis, Jos Näpflin, Daniel Schibli) in the 1990s, when the gallery moved to Basel. Its program then also included works of Rebecca Horn and artists in their 20s and 30s and above (Daniela Keiser, Karim Noureldin, Till Velten, Pavel Pepperstein, Olav Christopher Jenssen et al.).

Back to Zürich in 2001, the gallery tended mainly to multimedia art that concentrates on an experimental impulse and is characterized by connotation, appropriation, re-staging, recasting, multi-language and sound (Shahryar Nashat, Georges Adéagbo, Eran Schaerf, Yuri Leiderman, Keren Cytter, Jan Fabre, G.R.A.M., Ryan Gander, Yesim Akdeniz Graf, Lucy Skaer , Anita Di Bianco, Marc Bauer, Claudia Wieser et al.). The works of these artists most often reflect the various structures of perception in a playful manner.

During spring of 2009 Elisabeth Kaufmann and Christiane Büntgen decided to direct the further course of the gallery under the new name of SCHAU ORT. While some former coorporations with artists have expired over time, we are proud of having accompanied several artists in our program from the very beginning of their careers until now. Different from customary gallery methods, we strive to allow room for innovative projects in addition to our regular exhibitions. In this spirit, the inauguration of SCHAU ORT took place in the public space of Rotwandstr./Müllerstr. with a perfomance by Zurich based Street Art protagonist Mayo Irion, accompanied by Joyful Noise by Catdogs.

Elisabeth Kaufmann passed away April 21, 2010 - she will be sadly missed. Beginning of the year, the gallery ownership was transferred to her business partner Christiane Büntgen. Please read the complete press release in English or German.
